The Beginning

Over the past few years, very few wrestlers have risen to the forefront of the sport than Samoa Joe. From near obscurity when he began wrestling in '99 to one of the most popular wrestlers in the world today, Samoa Joe has all the potential to be one of the first truly great superstars of the 21st century.

Joe's journey into the wrestling world had its unique turns early on, as Joe was expected to take a much different path. His family founded, as said on his website, "the most prominent Polynesian Dance Troop in the United States," Tiare Productions. Joe made his debut with the troop in a major way, dancing at the age of 5 at the 1984 Summer Olmypics Opening Ceremonies in Los Angeles, California, close to Joe's hometown. Joe was a major part of the dance troop as he grew older, possibly helping him gain his unique physical abilities. Joe had other help as well, as he was a California State Junior Judo Champion, as well as an All-League high school football player.

UIWA

At the age of 20, though, Joe decided on taking a different path, training at the UIWA's West Coast Dojo in September '99 under the tutelege of Cincinnati Red. Joe soon made his debut, wrestling his first match in December '99. He would train for the next few months in and around California, staying close to home, since there were many independent organizations in the area. Joe also hit it big in the UIWA, winning the Tag-Team Titles twice during his run there.

UPW

Samoa Joe next made waves in Ultimate Pro Wrestling, a former World Wrestling Federation affiliate (where wrestlers like the Prototype, aka John Cena, earned their credentials). In March '00, Samoa Joe won the UPW No Holds Barred Championship, defending it for the next month before losing the gold. Samoa Joe later hit it big a year later, beating a top competitior in Christopher Daniels to become the UPW Heavyweight Champion. Samoa Joe would go on to become the longest-ever reigning UPW Champ, defending the belt for the next 8 months against wrestlers like "Outlaw" Mike Knox, Sean O'Haire, and Tommy Dreamer, among others. Samoa Joe was finally taken down by Mikey Henderson at the end of November '01, ending his long reign at the top.

Zero One

It was during 2001 that Samoa Joe also traveled overseas, wrestling frequently for Shinya Hashimoto's Zero One promotion. In June '01, at the Shingeki show, Samoa Joe teamed with Keiji Sakoda, beating Katsumi Usuda & Yuki Ishikawa to become the first NWA Intercontinental Tag-Team Champions. It was a short reign, though, as the belts were later awarded in July '01 by NWA President Howard Brody to Steve Corino & Mike Rapada. Circumstances causing this event are unclear at this time. Nonetheless, Samoa Joe (sometimes going by the name of "King Joe") continued to wrestle in Zero One, competing in several leagues, including two years of the Fire Festival. It was in late '02, though, that Samoa Joe found another home: Ring of Honor.
