History: Billy Kidman, for such a young man, has been around. He teamed with Ace Darling for much of his early career, forming the Shooting Stars. Along with Darling, he earned the ECWA Tag Team titles. Later on, the Shooting Stars moved over to the USWA (formerly the CWA), where they again won the Tag Team Titles. Kidman also earned the TWWF Cruiserweight Title before he came to WCW.

As a high-flying cruiserweight, Kidman rarely was given the big matches. So he decided to join Raven's flock. There Kidman fought many big matches, but was never able to bring home the gold. In the summer '98, Kidman slowly started to break away from the Flock, which ended at Fall Brawl '98, when he helped Saturn win the "Control of the Flock" match, dismantling the Flock. The next night, Kidman managed to win the WCW Cruiserweight Title from Juventud Guerrera, finally earning some gold in WCW. He held onto the belt for more than 2 months before losing it to Guerrera, then came back at the next PPV to regain it. By this time, Kidman was becoming one of the fan favorites of WCW, showing his skills again and again against many opponents in the heavily-contended Cruiserweight division.

In February '99, Kidman and Chavo Guerrero Jr teamed up for the Tag-Team Title tournament, trying to move up in the rankings. However, Chavo turned on Kidman, attacking him after one of their matches. This set up their match at Superbrawl IX, where Kidman defended his title. At Uncensored (March '99), Kidman retained the title once again, besting the newest Cruiserweight, Mikey Whipwreck. The next Nitro, though, Kidman lost to Rey Mysterio, Jr, finally giving up his cruiserweight title. Mysterio announced that Kidman would get another title shot at Spring Stampede. During the month, however, Kidman and Mysterio teamed up to defeat Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko (with some help from Raven and Saturn), which gave them the WCW tag-team titles. Despite their being a team, Kidman and Mysterio fought in what was considered one of the best matches at Spring Stampede, with Mysterio again coming out on top.

Kidman and Mysterio continued to defend the tag belts until Slamboree, when they were defeated in a 3-Way match, due to Kanyon's interference. They lost the titles to Raven & Saturn (the other team was Benoit & Malenko). After this loss, Kidman faded out of the main circuit for a while, still wrestling on the TV events, yet not receiving a push. For a few months, Kidman stayed out of the big picture, as the Cruiserweight division grounded to a halt.

In August '99, Kidman was wrestling a match with Eddie Guerrero, when El Vampiro, who was feuding with Eddie at the time, came out and interfered. Kidman, though, attacked Vampiro instead, allying himself with Guerrero. Along with Rey Mysterio Jr, the three faced Vampiro and the Insane Clown Posse at Road Wild '99. Kidman stole the show, and the match, with the Shooting Star Press applied to Vampiro. Kidman, Guerrero, Mysterio, and also Konnan then joined together to form the Filthy Animals, a 'cliq' of friends in the back. A few days after Road Wild, Kidman and Diamond Dallas Page came to blows after Kidman mentioned DDP's wife, Kimberly, as the most beautiful Nitro girl. Kidman surprisingly won the match over DDP, but was later whipped and hung due to DDP's anger. However, this feud basically died out before it started.

At Fall Brawl, Kidman, Mysterio, and Guerrero duplicated their earlier victory, once again taking down Vampiro and the Insane Clown Posse. During this time, however, the Filthy Animals began to change their attitude, becoming more deceitful and devious towards their opponents. For a time, they seemed perilously close to turning heel, including Kidman and Torrie Wilson, his girlfriend. Still, the group stayed together. At Halloween Havoc, after Rey Mysterio Jr. was injured earlier in the month, Kidman replaced him in a tag-team title Triple Threat match, teaming with Konnan against Hugh Morrus & Brian Knobs, and the eventual winners of the belts, Harlem Heat. This cost the Filthy Animals their only legitimate title reign.

Kidman's next run came in the Mayhem World Title Tournament. Throughout the end of October, and into November, Kidman fought to stay in the running for the biggest belt in WCW. He defeated his partner Konnan in the first round, and took down Norman Smiley in the second, but ultimately fell to the eventual winner, Bret Hart, in a good match-up. Instead, Kidman, Tori, and Guerrero teamed up in an Elimination match against their rivals in the Revolution, Dean Malenko, Perry Saturn, and Asya. Kidman had a surprisingly bad showing, mainly due to Torrie twisting her ankle in the first few minutes. After Guerrero & Kidman argued about who should help her, Guerrero shoved him, allowing Malenko to get the roll-up and make Kidman the first to be eliminated. His team later lost, with Saturn being the sole survivor.

Kidman took Starrcade off to nurse some old injuries back to health, then returned in the new millenium, determined to move back into contendership for many titles. His first target became his old nemeses, the Revolution. In a Catch-as-Catch-Can match, where the first person to touch the ground loses, Malenko and Kidman went at it at Souled Out. It was a short match, when, at one point, Malenko rolled out of the ring, apparently to catch his breath. Accident or no, the rules held, and Kidman got the victory. In the same night, Kidman took on Perry Saturn in a Bunkhouse Brawl, and again came out victorious. But the final match for him was against the mammoth Wall, and, with a steel cage keeping interference away, Kidman was taken down. Winning two out of three matches in one night proved to be a huge step forward for the young man.

Next, Kidman renewed acquaintances with Vampiro, and the two began a protracted feud that ended at Superbrawl, with Kidman getting another victory with the Shooting Star Press. It was a decent match between two up-and-comers in WCW. Kidman's next move was a little surprising, as he partially broke off from the Filthy Animals to begin aiding an old friend in Booker, who was being constantly double-teamed by Big T and Stevie Ray, the new Harlem Heat. At Uncensored, Kidman & Booker showed how good they were, taking down the new version of Harlem Heat.

With a string of PPV victories behind him, Kidman decided to set his sights on a title he had held many times. At the end of March '00, he faced the Artist formerly known as Prince Iaukea in a Cruiserweight Title match. Kidman came out on top, earning the Cruiserweight strap for the third time. The reign, unfortunately, would only last as long as Thunder, as the Artist reclaimed the belt through trickery. Kidman looked to be going after the Artist yet again, when things in WCW changed drastically over a brief week's time. Kidman soon found himself moving higher than he once was.

In April '00, Eric Bischoff and Vince Russo returned to the head of WCW, and immediately built up a force of younger wrestlers, calling them the New Blood. Billy Kidman instantly became one of Bischoff's leading men, as he called out Hulk Hogan, wanting his shot at him. Kidman & Bischoff quickly became two of the most hated in the wrestling world, using a hummer to destroy the limo that Hogan resided in, and putting him in the hospital for a brief period of time. During the hospital stay of Hogan, Kidman competed in the US Title Tournament at Spring Stampede '00. Unfortunately, his former opponent Vampiro came out on top in their match, eliminating Kidman. When Hogan came back to WCW, he and Kidman brawled in and out of the arenas WCW was at, usually with the larger Hogan having control. The feud soon brought in Horace Hogan, the nephew of the Hulkster. At Slamboree '00, with Bischoff as the special referee, Kidman and Hogan faced off in the ring. In the end, Kidman was nailed, and, with Horace holding Bischoff's unconscious hand, Hogan got the victory.

However, at the next Nitro, Bischoff declared that, because of Horace's interference, Kidman got the win. This brought the Hulkster back out, and the feud between the two continued. Tension erupted in the New Blood camp, however, when Bischoff got Horace to turn on his uncle by promising him Tori Wilson, who didn't seem to be against the arrangement. Horace and Kidman came to blows multiple times, with "Hollywood" Hogan returning to join in. It seemed that Horace and Kidman had settled their differences, though, going into the Great American Bash. Horace was the special ref this time, with Kidman again taking on "Hollywood". But Horace proved he was still on the side of his uncle, as was Tori, so Kidman took another loss.

The Nitro after GAB '00 proved to be a major step for Kidman, as he basically turned on the New Blood, referee'ing a match between Hollywood Hogan and Jeff Jarrett cleanly, and even giving Hogan a chair to use against the World Champ. But the match ended badly for both Kidman and Hogan, as Bill Goldberg ran down and speared Kidman, then Jackhammered Hogan through a table. Kidman then disappeared from the action for a while, only appearing occassionally with his girl, Torrie. A new angle began, though, when Torrie left Kidman to join with Shane Douglas instead. Kidman started a massive feud with Douglas, while Torrie played a critical role. The two wrestlers met up at New Blood Rising in a "Strap" match, although pinfalls were counted. During the brawl, Torrie tried to hit Kidman with her shoe, but missed, hitting Douglas instead. Although Douglas did hit his Pittsburgh Plunge, Kidman later got the victory with the Shooting Star Press. After the match, though, Douglas got revenge, hanging Kidman over the top rope until Big Vito came to his aid.

Kidman & Douglas continued to battle for the next month, with Kidman gaining his own ally in Medusa. This eventually led to Kidman & Madusa facing off against Douglas & Torrie in a Scaffold match at Fall Brawl. Early on in the fight, Torrie went down the ladder, and Medusa started to follow, but was kicked off by Douglas, falling all the way to the ground 18 feet below. This left Kidman & Douglas, with Douglas using his superior size and strength to his advantage. Despite Kidman's best efforts, Douglas threw Kidman off the top all the way to the stage, winning the match. After losing to Douglas, Kidman was without any allies, neither Madusa nor Torrie. This soon changed, when he rejoined his former brothers-in-arms, the Filthy Animals, most notably Rey Mysterio Jr. Kidman & Mysterio became a long-lasting tag-team, joining up whenever possible. At Halloween Havoc '00, Kidman & Mysterio faced off against the Boogie Knights (ex-Filthy Animal member Disco Inferno & "Wunderkind" Alex Wright) and the WCW tag-team champions, Mark Jindrak & Sean O'Haire. The Filtyh Animals were in the midst of a war with the Natural Born Thrillers, of which Jindrak & O'Haire belonged. The match soon broke down into a melee, with battles going on all over the place. In the end, O'Haire hit his SeanTon Bomb, winning the match. Afterwards, the champions beat down on Kidman & Mysterio, as well as Konnan, who tried to make the save. Sgt. AWOL of the MIA stable made the save.

Kidman & Mysterio continued their battles with the Boogie Knights, but things got more difficult when Wright used his wallet, purchasing the talents of one of the most dangerous tag-teams around, Kronik. Kidman & Mysterio tried to fight through Kronik more than once, with little success. This led up to the duo facing Alex Wright & Kronik in a Handicap match at WCW Mayhem '00. Kronik again dominated for the beginning of the match, as Kidman & Mysterio just couldn't handle the monsters despite their speed. But as the match continued, Kronik suddenly departed, saying that the Disco Inferno hadn't bought enough minutes. The handicap match continued, only now Wright was handicapped. Kidman & Mysterio later ended it with their Nutcracker Suite maneuver (Mysterio off the ropes with a legdrop, while Kidman held Wright's legs).

The Filthy Animals next turned their attention to Jeff Jarrett and the Harris Brothers, and had a shifting feud with them for the next few weeks. The two teams decided to have a Street Fight at Starrcade to decide what's what. At the event, though, Jarrett wanted a change of plans, telling the Commissioner (Mike Sanders) that he wanted a Bunkhouse Brawl instead. They compromised, and the two teams fought in a Bunkhouse Brawl Street Fight. The match was very violent, with weapons being scattered all over the ring. At one point, Jarrett picked up Mysterio and powerbombed him into a dumpster on the floor. The match then settled down, becoming a more typical 6-man battle with tags and all. This lasted for a few minutes, before the brawl broke out once again. Mysterio again took a huge bump, being H-Bombed through a table by the Harris Brothers. Kidman came in and took control, giving Jarrett his new maneuver, the Kid Krusher. But one of the Harris brothers then hit Kidman with a liquor bottle, knocking him out enough so that Jarrett could apply his Stroke finisher and get the win.

Far from being discouraged, the Filthy Animals headed into their next feud, battling against Team Canada (Lance Storm, Mike Awesome, & Elix Skipper). They came to the aid of "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, who had been part of Team Canada for a time before they turned on him. This all led up to a "Penalty Box" match at WCW Sin at the start of 2001. Kidman, Mysterio, & Konnan faced Storm, Awesome, & Skipper, with Duggan as the special guest referee, calling "penalties" on the wrestlers that would end up putting the wrestler in a box for a certain amount of time. During the match, 3-on-1 encounters happened numerous times. In the end, after a major brawl, Kidman, Konnan, Awesome, & Skipper were all sent to the box, while Mysterio and Storm fought it out. Awesome got out of the box first, though, making it a double-team, which allowed Awesome to powerbomb Mysterio, followed by Storm's Canadian Mapleleaf submission hold, making Mysterio give up before Kidman & Konnan could return.

After a few straight PPV defeats, the Animals dispersed. While still a stable, each wrestler began doing his own thing. This led to Mysterio getting the Cruiserweight Title shot at the champion, Chavo Guerrero Jr, at Superbrawl: Revenge, while Kidman looked to be the odds-on favorite in the Cruiserweight Contenders match. But before the event, Kidman was taken out by Bam-Bam Bigelow, who was later shown to have been paid off by Guerrero Jr to ensure that Kidman wouldn't compete. Instead, "Sugar" Shane Helms took Kidman's place and won the title shot. Kidman and Helms faced off at the next Nitro, with Helms surprisingly getting the win over the veteran. Kidman, thus, was temporarily out of the Cruiserweight Title hunt, as was Mysterio, who lost to Guerrero Jr at Superbrawl. The two then teamed back up for the challenge of the new Cruiserweight Tag-Team Titles, which were put up for grabs in a tournament.

Kidman & Mysterio proved to be the favorites in the tournament, first defeating Johnny Swinger & Jason Lee fairly easily. They then took out 3 Count (Shannon Moore & Evan Karagias) to make it to the finals at WCW Greed. They faced off against Elix Skipper & Kid Romeo, who were surprising finalists, considering that Romeo had just arrived in WCW. The two teams both showed that they wanted the belts, fighting up and down the ramp and around the ringside area at times. There were numerous high-risk maneuvers, making the match one for the highlight reels in 2001. In the end, Romeo caught Mysterio in mid-air and dropped him with a Northern Lights Bomb, then pinned him. Romeo & Skipper left with the belts, while Kidman & Mysterio were once again left on the outside.

This would only last for a few weeks, as it was announced that, at the final Turner-run WCW event, all of the belts would be on the line. At the season finale, Kidman & Mysterio took on the Jung Dragons and Three Count in a 3-Way Cruiserweight Tag-Team Contenders match. After a flurry of fighting, Kidman & Mysterio came out on top when Mysterio took out Shannon Moore with a guillotine legdrop. This made Kidman & Mysterio the #1 Contenders again, thus having them face Romeo & Skipper later that night. The two teams put on another spirited match, with all four men having near falls. In the end, Kidman reversed Skipper's finisher into the Kid Krusher and made the cover, winning the Cruiserweight Tag-Team Titles for himself and Mysterio as the old WCW era came to an end.

In June '01, the invasion of the WWF by WCW stars began, as various stars made run-ins. This eventually caused WCW matches to be sanctioned during WWF programming. A few matches in, Billy Kidman made his first appearance on WWF television, challenging the WCW Cruiserweight Champion, "Hollywood" Gregory Helms. The match went back and forth, with both men trying their finishers without success. Kidman, in particular, nearly lost when he missed the Shooting Star Press. But he came back later, reversing Helms' Vertebreaker into a new finisher, dropping him facefirst onto the mat with Kidman's knees. Kidman then made the pin, winning the match and getting the WCW Cruiserweight strap for the fourth time in his career. As the weeks progressed and WCW joined up with ECW in the WWF Invasion, Kidman became one of the few WCW wrestlers actually being cheered when he came out. A match was soon set up between him and the WWF Lightweight Champion, X-Pac. The two faced off at WWF Invasion in a textbook Cruiserweight match, with many high-flying moves, including Kidman leaping right into the X-Factor. Kidman managed to kick out of the finisher, then came back later on with the Shooting Star Press to get the victory, his first with the WWF.
