Drew Carey's well-known in the comedic world. He had a strong stand-up comic career, he's been involved with several hit television shows (The Drew Carey Show, Who's Line Is It Anyway), and he even got to curse about the voting structure on Last Comic Standing. Yet one role probably few people thought he would be part of is in the squared circle.

As unbelievable as it sounds, Carey was involved in one of the biggest matches of the year, when he was at the World Wrestling Federation's '01 Royal Rumble. Carey was there to promote a stand-up special he had on pay-per-view in the next month, and, as the storyline went, he wanted to get some tips from a true PPV genius, Vince McMahon. Carey first ran into Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley & her husband, Triple H. Stephanie was currently in a feud with Trish Stratus (Vince's girlfriend at the time), and she managed to spin Carey in that direction, saying that Trish was a big fan. Carey subsequently went to Trish's dressing room and flirted with her, while also again looking for Vince. He found him, with Vince, obviously a little upset at Carey's interest in Trish, quickly convincing Carey that a great way to promote his PPV would be to take part in the Royal Rumble match! With Trish sweet-talking him, and Vince saying that he wouldn't get hurt, Carey agreed, getting some sweats delivered to him to change into. Vince, meanwhile, informed Tiger Ali Singh that his unit's number in the Rumble (which could have gone to either D-Lo Brown or Chaz) instead was going to Carey, to which Singh replied "Kar-ey? Who is this Kar-ey?"

Carey later had a short confrontation in the back with the Big Red Machine, Kane, with Carey trying to be friendly to him, only to have Kane walk away. Carey later entered the Rumble at #5, a terrible draw, but Carey was just there to have fun, so why would he care? Carey watched from the outside as the Hardy Boyz, Jeff & Matt, fought it out, actually eliminating each other! Carey then entered, on his own in the ring! However, this didn't last long, as wrestler #6 came out: Kane. The Big Red Machine came towards the ring with his usual pyrotechnics, even as Carey tried to get the Hardy Boyz to come back into the ring. With Kane staring him in the face, a frightened Carey tried to offer money to save himself. Kane didn't allow it, though, instead knocking the money down and threatening to Chokeslam the TV star! Luckily for Carey, entrant #7, Raven, ran down next and attacked Kane, distracting him. Carey needed no further incentive, as he quickly waved goodbye and hopped over the ropes, eliminating himself! Carey managed to escape without a scratch, which is more than some celebrities can say regarding Kane (see: Pete Rose).

Will Drew Carey ever return to the in-ring action of World Wrestling Entertainment? Skeptics would say not a chance. Yet those same skeptics would never have foreseen Carey in the ring at the Rumble, either. You never know what to expect when it comes to Vince McMahon and WWE.
